Today marks World Book Day, a celebration of the joy and power of reading. First celebrated in 1995, World Book Day is dedicated to books, stories and the positive impact that reading can have on people of all ages. Across the UK, thousands of children and young people will be marking the occasion, often by dressing up as their favourite book characters and sharing their love of stories.
This year is particularly special as 2026 has been named the UK’s National Year of Reading, with the theme “Go All In”. The initiative encourages people to explore the subjects and interests they already love by discovering new books and stories that deepen their understanding and curiosity. Reading has a unique ability to transport us to new worlds while also helping us see our own experiences from fresh perspectives.
At Bright Futures UK, books often provide a meaningful way for volunteers and young people to connect. Some of the ways reading plays a role in our sessions include exploring texts that are currently being studied in the classroom, practising reading aloud together and predicting what might happen next in a story. Young people are also encouraged to write stories about their own experiences with illness, giving them a creative outlet to share their voice. In many befriending matches, reading also becomes a shared interest, with volunteers and young people discussing their latest reads and recommending books to each other.
Research shows that reading for pleasure can have significant wellbeing benefits. Studies suggest that people who read for enjoyment report lower levels of stress. Around 19% of readers say reading helps them feel less lonely, while 44% of regular readers say it has improved their mental health.
However you choose to read, it can make a difference. Whether it is comics, graphic novels, audiobooks or a traditional paperback, stories have the power to inspire, comfort and connect us.
However you are celebrating today, whether that is dressing up as a favourite character, continuing a current read or simply taking a moment to enjoy a good book, we hope you have a wonderful World Book Day.
