We work to influence policy, raise awareness, and champion the needs of children and young people whose education has been disrupted by illness.
Advocacy & policy work
Shaping policy and amplifying young voices
Bright Futures UK was born out of lived experience and championed by the young people we support. Our founders and many of our volunteers know first-hand what it feels like to have education disrupted by illness. That’s why young people’s voices guide everything we do—from the design of our programmes to the changes we call for in policy.
We believe young people should not only benefit from support, but also lead the conversation about what needs to change. By sharing their stories, ideas, and experiences, they help us show decision-makers the reality of life when illness interrupts education—and what can make it better.
Change is needed
What we want to change
Every year, thousands of young people miss months of school because of long-term illness, yet they are often invisible in the education system. Right now:
There is no national record of how many children are missing education due to illness.
Families face delays and confusion as schools and local authorities struggle to provide timely support.
Too many young people return to school anxious, behind in their studies, and at risk of dropping out.
Our call to action
We are calling for
With the right policies in place, illness does not have to mean lost education or lost potential.
01
National data collection on children missing education because of illness.
02
Faster access to support, so that education can continue as soon as a young person is well enough.
03
Stronger statutory guidance so that schools, local authorities and external agencies like Bright Futures UK know exactly what to do, and by when.
