Offer companionship and encouragement to young people during illness, helping them feel less alone.
Befriending
Bring friendship, fun, and companionship to young people who need it most. As a Bright Futures UK befriender, you’ll help children and young people discover new hobbies, enjoy shared activities, and feel less isolated during recovery.
Become a Befriender
Serious illness can often leave young people feeling cut off from their peers. Befriending provides a safe, supportive connection – whether through chatting, playing games, or exploring creative activities – that helps them feel seen, valued, and less alone.
Befriending takes place online and can be easily arranged around your availability. Whether you share a weekly hobby or simply enjoy regular conversations, your time will have a lasting impact.
Volunteering as a befriender strengthens communication, empathy, and relationship-building skills – qualities that are invaluable in both personal and professional life. You’ll also gain experience in supporting the wellbeing of young people.
As a befriender, you’ll be welcomed into a network of supportive volunteers who believe in the importance of connection. We’ll provide resources, training, and ongoing support to help you make the most of your role.
Join us as a befriender and bring friendship, fun, and support to a young person’s life.

Volunteer Mentor
I really enjoyed tutoring. I found it very fulfilling, and it taught me a lot. I really hope my tutee continues to achieve all they would want to achieve in the future!
Volunteer Tutor (Biology)
It was a positive experience when my tutee told me that psychology (our subject) had become her favourite subject to study. It goes to show how impactful 1-1 sessions are for young people.

It’s great hearing my young person telling me she looks forward to our sessions and that she’s had a good time every week!
