Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week

NAW2026 Social Banners Facebook 1

This National Apprenticeship Week, we want to highlight the important role apprenticeships play in creating meaningful and accessible pathways into work for young people.

Apprenticeships can be a strong option for those who want to gain practical experience alongside a recognised qualification. They offer an opportunity to learn in a real workplace, build confidence, develop employability skills, and earn a wage while training.

For many young people, particularly those who have experienced disruption to education due to illness or other challenges, the traditional route into employment may not feel realistic or suitable. Apprenticeships can provide an alternative pathway that values learning through doing, gradual progression, and supported development.

Why Apprenticeships Matter

Apprenticeships are designed to combine structured learning with hands-on experience. This can be especially beneficial for young people who:

  • Thrive in practical, real-world environments
  • Prefer applied learning over purely classroom-based study
  • Want to build independence and confidence step by step
  • Benefit from structured support while gaining workplace experience

Rather than choosing between education and employment, apprenticeships allow young people to do both at the same time.

A Wide Range of Sectors

Apprenticeships are available across a broad range of industries, including:

  • Health and social care
  • Business administration
  • Digital and technology
  • Construction and engineering
  • Creative industries
  • And many more

There are also higher and degree apprenticeships for those who want to continue studying at an advanced level while working.

At Bright Futures UK, we encourage young people and families to explore all available options when thinking about the future. Apprenticeships can be a valuable route for those who want structure, real-world experience, and a clear step into employment.

How Volunteers Can Make a Difference

This National Apprenticeship Week, we also want to recognise the role that trusted adults can play in helping young people explore future pathways into work.

For many children and young people, particularly those who have experienced disruption to education through illness, taking the next step can feel overwhelming. Apprenticeships can be an excellent option, but understanding where to start, how to apply, and what different roles involve often requires guidance, encouragement, and someone to talk things through with.

At Bright Futures UK, we are always looking for volunteers who can support young people to explore their interests, build confidence, and take practical steps towards opportunities such as apprenticeships, training, and employment.

This could include:

  • Helping a young person identify their strengths and goals
  • Talking through apprenticeship options and different sectors
  • Supporting with applications, CVs, or interview preparation
  • Offering encouragement and structure as they plan their next steps

You do not need to have a background in education. If you have experience in any industry, or simply want to help a young person feel more informed and confident about their future, your insight and time could make a meaningful difference. Find out more here.

This National Apprenticeship Week, let’s recognise not only the value of apprenticeships themselves, but also the supportive networks that help young people access them.
