National Report on Children and Young People Missing School Due to Illness

Bright Futures UK is releasing the first national research report examining the impact of long-term illness on education for children and young people aged 5–24. At a pivotal moment for SEND reform and changes to EHCPs and Individual Support Plans, this landmark study reveals the scale of children missing school due to serious physical and mental health conditions — and the long-term consequences for families and the economy.

An estimated 279,000 young people are currently out of education due to illness, with significant financial costs for families and reduced lifetime earnings for those affected. This timely report brings essential evidence into the national debate and sets out why children forced out of school by illness must be part of education reform.
